A whole-school approach to teaching PE is embedded in all classrooms. At St Thomas More we follow the ‘Get Set PE’ scheme of work which practices the PE National Curriculum, Key Stage appropriate aims and objectives. We aim to provide a well-balanced curriculum which covers the statutory requirements for the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). In the Nursery and Reception Class (EYFS), opportunities are provided for children to be active and to develop their co-ordination, control and movement through moving and handling activities which involve the use of a range of equipment and involve different spatial experiences. These will enable the children to achieve/ work towards the Early Learning Goals.
In foundation stage, KS1 and KS2, PE is taught for 2 hours a week through PE lessons with our sports coach, Mr Brown, and ‘Mini PE’ sessions delivered daily by our class teachers. We believe children in Reception and KS1 should be equipped with the skills they need to take part in a range of sports when they reach KS2. For this reason, the learning lower down the school focusses on skill acquisition and development. By the time children reach KS2, they are ready to apply these skills to a range of gaming situations, and most importantly, they foster positive attitudes towards all sports because every child has the skills they need to play them.
We teach a variety of sports and games through our PE Curriculum and offer a range of after-school sports. We are lucky to have close links with local clubs in football, netball and Gaelic football, who have been very supportive.
Our school teams have been successful in Coventry Catholic Primary Schools Competitions, Coventry Primary Schools and School Games Competitions. We are inclusive and encourage children of all abilities to participate. We promote the development of the whole child through sports and physical education to support their physical and emotional well-being, lead active lifestyles, build their self-esteem and belief, team work and decision-making, participation and competitiveness, which will lead to enjoyment and confidence.
